HISTORY OF THE KASPROWY WIERCH CABLE CAR

The cable car to Kasprowy Wierch was built incredibly quickly - on August 1, 1935, construction began with clearing the road enabling the delivery of construction materials to Myślenickie Turnie, and on March 15, 1936, after 227 (!) days of construction, the first cart drove from Kuźnice to the top of Kasprowy Wierch. Construction was carried out in extremely difficult conditions because snow fell already in September. Building materials were delivered in primitive trucks to Myślenickie Turnie and by horse-drawn carts to the shelter at Hala Gąsienicowa - they were then carried on the backs by porters and a few Hutsul ponies.

At the end of October 1935, the construction of wooden supports was completed, along which a working railway called coffin moved, which significantly improved contact with workers working on the construction of the final station. The work was carried out in 2-3 shifts and about a thousand people were employed. Barracks were set up at the top of Kasprowy, where workers lived for several days without going down to Zakopane. The cable car to Kasprowy Wierch had many opponents from the very beginning (and still has them), but the fact is that for the last 98 years (1936-2024) it has allowed many tourists from all over the world to discover the beauty of the Polish Tatra Mountains. Its construction cost 3.5 million pre-war zlotys - the investment paid off after three years of operation.

With skiers in mind, in 1938, an electric sleigh lift was built on the slope of Hala Gąsienicowa, which could accommodate... 16 people at the same time ()I am posting a photo of this first lift below). In 1962, the first chairlift at Hala Gąsienicowa was put into operation. In 2000, single chairs were replaced by modern and comfortable four-seater sofas. The same ski lift with two-person chairs has been operating at Hala Goryczkowa since 1969 (!), which hurts the calves of subsequent generations of skiing enthusiasts when getting on ;).

Only in 2006, after 12 years of efforts, did Polskie Koleje Linowe receive permission to modernize the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch. New, comfortable carriages have been operating since December 2007. Fortunately, the starting, intermediate and final station buildings have remained the same, which I think adds to the charm of our cable car.
